New York Restaurants

  1. Gramercy Tavern – elegant restaurant, New American.  My favorite place for special occasion
  2. Eleven Madison – elegant restaurant and always on top list of NY restaurants.   Pricey and for special occasion
  3. Katz’s Deli – pastrami sandwiches.  I have never been but Roger has and this is THE place to go for pastrami sandwich
  4. Grimaldi’s – favorite pizza joint, located in Brooklyn.  Most would say to go to Lombardi’s but Grimaldi’s is the real thing and very local
  5. Izakaya MEW – authentic Japanese izakaya.  I went here with some friends the last time I was in NYC and loved it.  Very authentic, located in midtown in the basement.
  6. Bo Ky Restaurant – located in Chinatown, their country duck is superb! I get this everytime I’m home.  Be wary though as this place is quite divvy (it is in Chinatown!)
  7. Joe Shanghai – it’s not as good as Din Tai Fong but it’s a staple in Chinatown and been around a long time.  Pretty decent Shanghainese food.
  8. Golden Unicorn – old school dim sum place located in heart of Chinatown
  9. Blue Ribbon Sushi – went to the one in Brooklyn, this is where all the chefs go for late night dinner/snack. 
  10. Keens Steakhouse – at one point we had tried all the steakhouses in the city and this is my ultimate favorite.  They just do steak right! Old school steakhouse
  11. Ushiwakamaru – I haven’t been but all my friends in NYC love this place.  Not cheap but authentic Japanese style sushi bar

Korea - Seoul, Gwangju and Busan

As a family we traveled from Taipei to Seoul in the summer of 2023.   We stayed in Seoul for a few days before taking the train to Gwangju and Busan for 3 days and back to Seoul for two nights.   It was a wonderful exploring the landmarks with girls and experienced the food, shopping, and culture.  A few apps you may need to download: Naver for map, KakaoTalk for corresponding/communication, KakaoTaxi for taxi reservation. Stay: Seoul: Josun Palace, Gangnam.   If we were to choose again, I would preferred to stay near Myeong-dong instead of Gangnam because Myeong-dong is more central.  For us to head to the landmarks, we had to walk 10 minutes to the train station and at least 45 minutes on the train.  Sometimes it was faster and more cost effective to take the taxi instead of the train.   The hotel itself is very high end with wonderful breakfast buffet, indoor pool, and amenities.   Very high-end Busan: Park Hyatt Haeund...

Big Island, Hawaii

We visited the Big Island as a family in Feb 2022 because Lani mentioned that this is the only Hawaiian island she hasn't been to (I know, she's spoiled since she's only 8 and hasn't missed a year of Hawaii even during the pandemic!).   We stayed at the Westin Hapuna Beach so stayed in the west side of the island and did not get a chance to visit the volcano.   We did take a trip to the Punalu'u (black island sand beach) and Akaka Falls.  We ate at the hotel plenty but here's a list of some restaurants we did enjoy: - Merriman's Big Island : elegant prix-fixe for farm to table island fare.  We went with our daughters as a special treat and they did not disappoint - excellent cocktails (and mocktails) and they can tailor options to be kid-friendly.   - Honokohua L&L Hawaiian : great plate lunch close to the Kona airport, perfect pit stop for before or after your flight. - Ippy's Hawaiian BBQ : local Waimea restaurant serving plate lunch and ope...
