Tokyo

Roger and I lived in Tokyo, Japan for 18 months and although we don't miss working there, we truly miss the FOOD!  You haven't had REAL Japanese food until you've tasted them in Japan.

One of our favorite couple is heading to Tokyo and we compiled a list for them..here's to those who love to eat and shop!

Manga/Toy Store
There are two that we took most people to.  One is underground in Shibuya called Mandarake.  It has older more collectible toys.  The other is by Harajuku on Omotesando St called Kiddy Land and is like 4 stories tall.  It tends to have newer items.  Can also find a bunch more in Akihabara along with electronics and porn.
Food
Tonki: In Meguro and is my favorite Tonkatsu place. Is a bit more out of the way though, but still in Tokyo
Katsugin: In Ginza.  I think this is the other tonkatsu place a friend of ours liked.  Is menchi-katsu though which is a bit different, but they have ones where they add things like garlic or black sesame to it.
Midori Sushi: Is a good sushi place that's not too expensive by Ginza.  There also is another on Shibuya too.
Daikokuya: Famous Tempura place.  Was really good and right in Asakusa which is one of the big attractions in Tokyo.  There might be better ones but this is good and relatively easy to find.
I personally also love Coco Curry House, but is fast food curry and can get stuff similar back here.  Ramen is easy to find.  Only issue you might run into is that many of them you order by vending machine and then hand them the ticket.  Usually isn't extensive menu options though.
 - Ippudo: this is the famous ramen place (one located in Roppongi) that serves ramen through a small narrow window and everyone gets an individual box and seat.  I haven't personally tried but heard it's really good from friends.  Other franchise outside of Tokyo seem fancier and not at authentic.
 - Rokunisha: this is another famous ramen place with a location in the Tokyo Station Ramen Street.  It's well known for the ramen that is separate from the soup (where you have to dip the ramen into the soup and then eat).  I tried it and the soup base is incredibly awesome!!  Be aware that there's a long wait and you must get your ticket at the vending machine.  Make sure you read the menu to know which one to order in the machine - the machine is only in Japanese.

NEWLY ADDED - from 2015 trip
Uobei Shibuya Dogenzaka: conveyer belt sushi place with individual ordering screen - fresh sushi at a very reasonable price.
Matsue Roppongi: went to this fancy omikase only sushi place for my birthday and it did not disappoint.  The sushi was fresh, impecibly displayed and simply amazing.   There were plenty of sake to sample along with the sushi feast.  The location is a bit hard to find as it's hidden in a building in Roppongi.  Make sure to print out a walking map or use Google Map to find your way.
Kaoriya: must go for soba fans.  This place is local, authentic and truly home-made soba.  You can't go wrong with ordering any dish from this place - it's that good! Located in Ebisu, it's walking distance from the Ebisu train station.

Of course you need to do Tsukiji the Fish Market.  Just walk around and are a bunch of sushi shops right there.

Shopping
There is so much beauty in Japan and you can experience a piece of it while shopping in mega department stores or in small boutiques.  Here's a list of my favorite stores:
Takashimaya: located in Shinjuku, it is a mega department store with high end boutiques.  You can pretty much find everything here including a big Kinokuniya bookstore.  This is my go-to place for shoes, gifts and more!
Mitsukoshi: located in Ginza, this is a great place for window shopping.  Lots of high end brands and a great place to buy expensive work clothes.  Must check out their food department with wide variety of Japanese delicacies, expensive fruits, and more!
109: located in Shibuya, this is my go to place for everything trendy!  Hip hop music blasts non-stop and there's such a young vibe!  There's a lot of pink and cutesy outfit but check out the boutiques and you will find great stuff!
Tokyu Hands: located in Shibuya, this is one of my favorite store to visit.  They have everything from souvenirs, jewelry, home goods, paper goods, etc.  I love all the details and attention to beauty.
Don Quijote: located around Tokyo, closest to us was in Roppongi Crossings.  They are a mega discount store that sells food, furniture, second hand luxury item and even porn.  A store to get everything and anything!
Gion Tsujiri: this is my favorite place to buy green tea and matcha.  The tea originates from Kyoto but there are several location in Tokyo including one at Tokyo Station in the Daimaru department store (10th floor I believe).  They have amazing green tea ice cream parfait that is to die for!
